Welcome To The Theydon Oak
Daniel and his team invite you to The Theydon Oak Free House and Restaurant in Epping, Essex, where you will always find a warm welcome…..and much, much more
Nesting in the heart of picturesque Epping Forest, in Essex beside the ancient village of Coopersale you may be fortunate enough to discover the Theydon Oak public house. A grade II listed building, it has been standing on this spot for over four centuries. In more recent years it has become renowned far and wide for fine beers, excellent food provided from our restaurant and for atmosphere which has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
As you approach, you cannot fail to be enchanted by the rural charm. Festooned with flowering baskets and framed by mature trees of Epping Forest, which can only hint at the treat that awaits you. It may also account for the fact that the Theydon Oak is almost certainly one of the most photographed pubs in Essex.
On lazy summer days you can relax on one of the three spacious patios and eat ‘al fresco’ from the extensive menu. Children can play in complete safety in the thoughtfully laid out play area. With our very own stream meandering through the picturesque listed gardens, is it any wonder that we have won many local awards.
Moving inside you will immediately be taken by the sense of history that surrounds you. Exposed beams decorated with genuine horse brasses and antiques adorning every alcove. An inglenook fireplace that houses real log fires to welcome guests during the cold winter months. Areas of the original brickwork laid down over 400 years ago can still be seen. Inside you will find an excellent selection of freshly made food from the bar.
For something a little more special, why not treat yourself to a meal in our highly acclaimed a la carte restaurant. Open for both lunch and dinner every day of the week, it provides the perfect setting for that special occasion or important business lunch. To satisfy demand, the restaurant has been enlarged to seat over 60 people. Naturally, home cooked food remains the feature of our cuisine. This is accompanied by a selection of the more exotic dishes guaranteed to satisfy even the most demanding palette. Fine wines, vintage champagnes and a large selection of malt whiskies are also an attribute of the restaurant.
Your tour of the Theydon Oak is almost complete, but before ending, mention must be made of the ghost. Rumours abound locally that an apparition has been seen several times in the depths of the cellar, and occasionally passing silently across the inglenook fireplace…..But then again, it is only a rumour…or is it?
